Acupuncture began as a system of medicine over 3,500 years ago in ancient China and has continued to evolve since. It's sought after today partly because it's a holistic treatment that reduces stress and improves overall health at a lower cost than many conventional treatments.

What is acupuncture?

Treatment involves inserting very thin needles into specific points connected by pathways called meridians. After a thorough diagnosis, the practitioner selects the points best suited to the patient, the patient relaxes for roughly 20 to 30 minutes, and the needles are removed. Sessions sometimes add moxibustion (warming the point), cupping (a suction effect to increase local circulation), electric stimulation (a small current applied to the needles), or specialized massage techniques like tui na, trigger point therapy, or neuromuscular massage.

How does it work?

The exact mechanism is still being researched. Leading theories include the gate theory, where acupuncture interrupts pain signals through the nervous system, and stimulation of the body's own endorphins and anti-inflammatory responses. Needling also creates a reaction in the body's bioelectric field, with the fascia (connective tissue) as one possible conduit for that signal to travel through the body. Chinese medicine describes this in its own terms, yin and yang, qi and blood, and organ systems like the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney, which guide diagnosis and point selection even though they don't map directly onto Western anatomy.

What acupuncture treats

Current research continues to inform clinical guidelines. The strongest evidence to date is for migraine, headache, low back pain, knee osteoarthritis, allergic rhinitis, nausea, and post-operative pain. Acupuncture can also be effective for digestive issues, muscle and joint pain, nerve pain, cold and flu symptoms, stress and anxiety, weight loss, infertility, and other reproductive disorders.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is a very safe treatment when performed by a state-licensed acupuncturist. In Florida, practitioners who pass the required training and licensing exams receive the designation of Acupuncture Physician (AP), the credential both practitioners at Holistic Primary Care hold.

Chinese herbal medicine

Herbs are usually prescribed as a combination known as an herbal formula, chosen for a medicinal effect with few side effects. Formulas can come in pill form or as raw herbs, individual dried roots, leaves, or flowers cooked together into a custom preparation.

Cupping and electric stimulation

Cupping uses a vacuum effect on the skin to increase blood and lymph circulation. Electric stimulation applies a steady, precise current to selected acupuncture points to amplify their therapeutic effect. Watch the cupping therapy video to see it in practice, or read more about cupping therapy.
